Benton PUD tackles energy literacy with Rise 360

Educating and empowering a community

courses published to date, with more in development

Benton Public Utility District (PUD) distributes electricity and wholesale broadband to customers in Benton County, Washington. For over 75 years, they have served as a trusted energy partner for their customer-owners, offering environmentally responsible electricity that is both affordable and reliable.

Beyond their utility mission to “keep the lights on,” Benton PUD understands the importance of empowering individuals with educational resources about electrical energy. Benton PUD enlisted the help of Campbell Training Solutions to create an educational program that would empower members of their community to become better environmental stewards and make more informed energy purchasing decisions.

THE CHALLENGE

Benton PUD needed an engaging, seamless way to educate employees with critical knowledge

Benton PUD doesn’t just see themselves as an electrical energy provider but also a knowledge provider and a community partner. They recognize the importance of energy literacy in consumers’ ability to make informed decisions around their use of electricity.

Research shows that energy literacy has declined in recent years. Benton PUD wanted to change that—starting with their own employees. By providing team members with opportunities to grow their knowledge around power generation, distribution, and impact, employees could help their community increase overall energy IQ and engage in more energy-efficient behaviors.

Benton PUD previously faced challenges when scheduling employee training exclusively in person. With team members in both the office and the field, they needed an effective solution to provide educational opportunities for all their employees—with the flexibility to fit into their unique schedules and workflows.

THE ANSWER

Benton PUD and Campbell Training Solutions created a holistic energy education program with Rise 360

Benton PUD knows that investing in e-learning is essential to provide widespread value to their employees and achieve sustainable development goals. “We want to create proud, confident employee influencers,” says Melina Conover, Benton PUD’s Director of Executive Administration. “Growing our online employee education is a large component of our five-year strategic plan.”

They enlisted the help of Campbell Training Solutions, a local educational partner with 25 years’  training experience in the federal, manufacturing, utilities, and medical industries. Together, they launched EmPOWERed employee training, a comprehensive curriculum covering a range of energy topics. These include everything from the elements of an atom to the scientific and social environmental trade-offs of different electricity-generating sources.

Each EmPOWERed lesson, or “episode,” was built in Rise 360, beginning with a mini sitcom-style video embedded as a media block to capture learners’ interest. Corresponding knowledge checks and exams were also embedded as Storyline blocks within the episode, and “POWERful HighLIGHTs,” or key takeaways, reinforced the most important lessons. Benton PUD hoped the approach would help participating employees feel confident and excited to share what they’d learned in the community.

Upon completion of select Rise 360 courses, employees are offered in-person field trips to destinations like neighboring Energy Northwest’s Columbia Generating Station, the only commercial nuclear power plant in the Pacific Northwest, to tie the e-learning episodes to a hands-on experience.

This comprehensive approach has paid off. Participation in the program is optional, yet 82% of employees have completed the first lesson to date, with the remaining lessons showing similarly high levels of engagement.

UNLOCKING HUMAN POTENTIAL

With e-learning, Benton PUD increases energy literacy to empower their community

Valuing people is at the center of Benton PUD’s company culture, and educating employees through EmPOWERed is key to their success. The program furthers the organization’s holistic approach to safety, health, well-being, and education. It also provides employees with a greater purpose—becoming trusted energy partners in their community.

As they educate their own employees, Benton PUD also works to make their EmPOWERed content more widely available to teachers and community members. They’re preparing to release the program on their external website and they continue to develop energy topics for easy access in classrooms and at community events.

By laying the groundwork for energy literacy with e-learning, starting with their own employees, Benton PUD has created a more confident and engaged workforce that empowers its entire community.

“The e-learning component of our EmPOWERed program plays a fundamental role in our utility’s top strategic goal to value people,” says Conover. “That doesn’t just mean valuing our own employees, but also our entire community.”

With Rise 360, Benton PUD educates and empowers employees, increasing energy literacy for their entire community.

Benton PUD wanted a modern look and feel to the EmPOWERed training. The vertical scrolling that Rise 360 offers was very attractive as it mimics that of scrolling on the internet and social media platforms.

Since 1978, Assisting Families of Inmates (AFOI) has supported families of the incarcerated with meaningful visitation, family assistance, and children’s programs that achieve positive, evidence-based outcomes. Their MAC Children’s Program, established in 2000, focuses on students in Richmond City public schools who have an incarcerated loved one.

With over 100 children enrolled in the MAC Program weekly, AFOI understands the power of e-learning in providing flexible opportunities for skill-building, education, and support. AFOI launched an e-learning component to the MAC Program to help impacted children build coping skills and reduce the stigma around having an incarcerated loved one.

THE CHALLENGE

AFOI needed to adapt its in-person programming for a broader digital audience

Parental incarceration is one of the top 10 primary experiences that can impact the health and well-being of a child. Since 2000, AFOI’s MAC Program has focused on providing support to children with an incarcerated loved one in Richmond public schools.

The primary goals of the program are to reduce the stigma around having an incarcerated loved one and provide a forum for students to discuss their feelings. Until the COVID-19 pandemic, courses took place exclusively in the classroom. Pausing in-person instruction highlighted the need for e-learning and allowed AFOI flexibility to share the program with a broader audience.

Translating the program into a digital format was no small feat. Classroom facilitators can tailor lessons to suit learners of different ages and grade levels. AFOI needed to achieve this same level of customization for its e-learning so that children in multiple grades could engage with the content and build their coping skills without becoming overwhelmed.

THE ANSWER

Storyline 360’s branching capabilities helped AFOI engage learners across grade levels

AFOI enlisted the help of Articulate training partner Yukon Learning to adapt their in-person courses into e-learning. Additional consulting from an elementary school teacher well-versed in modifying courses for a virtual setting rounded out the team. Together, they adapted the 20-week e-learning program, breaking down complex topics from grief and loss to self-regulation, problem-solving, and self-esteem. Using Storyline 360, Yukon Learning and AFOI brought the courses to life.

AFOI knew that character development would be a crucial aspect of their e-learning to effectively connect with children and speak to their experiences. The team created a main character for the course—a dog named Mac—in Storyline 360 to guide learners through the material. They also built out Mac’s circle of friends, each with their own backstory, to represent different ages, backgrounds, and genders.

To approach learners of different grade levels, the team relied on Storyline 360’s branching feature to customize interactions for different ages and grade levels. For example, an interaction for younger learners might involve selecting either a “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” icon to avoid overwhelming them, while older learners might type a short response.

“The real power of the interactivity within these courses lies in Storyline 360’s branching capabilities,” says Brooke Schepker, Chief Design Officer at Yukon Learning. “The interactions for the MAC Program are custom-built for different grade levels, which allows learners of all ages to understand and engage with the material without feeling overwhelmed.”

UNLOCKING HUMAN POTENTIAL

With customized e-learning, AFOI provides deep support and builds coping skills for children with an incarcerated loved one

The MAC e-learning beta program included 26 participating children and their caregivers. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, particularly around the course’s in-depth character development, coverage of complex content, and interactive elements.

Moving forward, AFOI will release the course to all seven of the Richmond elementary schools it serves, as well as other interested entities and organizations. By providing digital access to their content, AFOI has opened the door to supporting even more impacted children, their families, and their communities.

Ultimately, the program is filling a much-needed gap within the child advocacy and child welfare spaces. “For many children, there can exist a shame or stigma around disclosing that they have an incarcerated loved one,” says Fran Bolin, AFOI’s Executive Director. “We want them to be able to understand their situation and feel more in control of it by building their resiliency and coping skills—whether they complete the program in person or online.”

With Storyline 360, Assisting Families of Inmates reduces the stigma around having an incarcerated loved one, empowering impacted children and their families with coping skills and support.

The real power of the interactivity within these courses lies in Storyline 360’s branching capabilities. The interactions for the MAC Program are custom-built for different grade levels, which allows learners of all ages to understand and engage with the material without feeling overwhelmed.

The National Institute of Intellectual Disability Studies promotes life-enhancing care with Rise 360

Empowering every layer of an organization to support individuals with disabilities

Rave reviews

for complex course material

For over 40 years, the National Institute of Intellectual Disability Studies has provided organizations with accredited training and resources to support individuals with disabilities. Through a platform combining both tutor-led and online training with workforce development services, they aim to educate each layer of an organization, from the frontline worker to company leadership—all with empathy and compassion for the individuals they serve.

This holistic approach aims to fill a much-needed gap in specialty knowledge around intellectual disabilities not only in the organization’s home country of Ireland, but also around the world. “We want to challenge organizations’ thinking around how they can enhance the lives of the people they’re supporting,” says Martha McGinn, the Institute’s Company Director. “And we want to empower them with ways they can enrich their ability to do their jobs.”

THE CHALLENGE

NIIDS needed a scalable way to convey complex, reflective, and engaging content

Online learning is an integral element of the Institute’s approach. Their library of roughly 700 courses includes both broad topics—like essential workplace skills—along with more specialized lessons to address the needs of a diverse array of individuals with disabilities.

To meet the growing needs for educational content, the organization needed a way to sustainably and efficiently scale their e-learning materials. But volume wasn’t the only challenge the Institute faced.

“We help organizations reflect on key questions about their approach and the individuals they serve,” says McGinn. “What elements of support have they already achieved? What are the gaps in their knowledge? We help them understand what people need in ways that are life-enhancing—that recognize the complexities of an intellectual disability while promoting autonomy.”

As they scaled, the Institute needed to maintain the highly tailored training they’re known for—an approach that allows organizations to reevaluate how they can best serve individuals with disabilities.

THE ANSWER

With Rise 360, the Institute created 25 e-learning courses in just 14 months

To tackle the challenge, the Institute used Rise 360 as their authoring app within the Articulate 360 platform to create engaging courses with assessments, interactive elements, embedded documents, and resources on ethics, changing laws, and more. In just over a year, McGinn single-handedly launched 25 courses with Rise 360’s intuitive user interface.

Each lesson and course ties back to the Institute’s signature competency framework so the content supports all levels of an organization. This has allowed the Institute to create courses that cover complex topics, such as relationships and sexuality. Interactive scenarios in each course help illustrate the topic’s nuances helping learners examine their own attitudes and beliefs.

For example, the Institute’s course on reducing the use of restrictive practice includes a detailed practice scenario about an individual with a complex intellectual disability. Lesson discussion points deepen the learner’s understanding and give them tools to empower that individual with both independence and support.

“With Rise 360, we can visualize the progression of a course so clearly,” says McGinn. “It’s easy to sequence complex material and create interactions that keep learners engaged—and to do so in an aesthetically pleasing way.”

“Articulate strengthens our messaging. It’s allowed us to incorporate a reflective dimension into our programs that challenges organizations’ thinking around how they can best support individuals with intellectual disabilities.”

Martha McGinn, Company Director, National Institute of Intellectual Disability Studies

UNLOCKING HUMAN POTENTIAL

Through e-learning, NIIDS removes structural barriers for individuals with disabilities

Feedback for the Institute’s Rise 360 courses has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly for  their more complex courses. McGinn says that Rise 360’s assessment and interactivity capabilities have been key to this, as they allow the Institute to guide organizations through a highly self-reflective education process.

“[Articulate has] allowed us to incorporate a reflective dimension to our programs that challenges organizations’ thinking around how they can best support individuals with intellectual disabilities,” says McGinn. This better prepares every level of an organization with the knowledge and strategies to empower people with disabilities—and to do so with empathy and compassion at every turn.

“Not only do the staff need to feel comfortable providing that support,” says McGinn, “the organization’s policies need to provide excellent guidance for those staff members.” Ultimately, this multifaceted approach to e-learning centers the person with the disability, leading to life-enhancing changes not only for individuals, but also for the organizations who support them.

With Rise 360, the National Institute of Intellectual Disability Studies empowers employees with the tools and resources they need to support individuals with disabilities.

THE CHALLENGE

Questrade needed an efficient, scalable way to grow top talent

  • Questrade wanted to deploy relevant, top quality courses on a variety of topics to grow and develop their employees. They also wanted to increase efficiency for their instructional design team and provide multiple authoring tools to meet a variety of training needs.
  • They needed to create an innovative, on-demand library of content and resources that would allow employees the flexibility to take courses at any time and take charge of their development journey.

  • Quickly creating engaging, relevant courses for on-demand employee self-enrollment was important to Questrade, as was meeting business demands to grow and develop employees and equip them with required skills through top-quality e-learning courses.

THE ANSWER

With Rise 360, Questrade created a robust library of over 100 courses

When Questrade first subscribed to Articulate 360, they were excited to start using Rise 360 because of its fast, flexible authoring functionality. Once they began authoring in Rise 360, Questrade found ways to expand their course offering with available pre-built templates. More importantly, they started discussing the value add that the templates would have for their business and culture.

In 2020, the team began taking the real-content courses available through Rise 360 and editing them to support their brand guidelines. They uploaded the modules into their learning management system and created custom learning categories. When they introduced this new learning resource to the organization, there was a lot of positive feedback and self-enrollments increasing for a wide variety of topics. To date, the Questrade team has offered more than 100 courses to their organization with more than 7500 enrollments.

Additionally, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Questrade needed to shift its customer service training model. After discovering that converting classroom sessions to Zoom was not as effective, many courses were converted into Rise 360 modules that could be easily accessed on-demand. Questrade reports that by converting to online learning modules, they were able to maintain the quality of the classroom sessions.

Moreover, the trainers benefited from additional time, which they utilized to deliver customized development programs to employees who required special assistance. The online learning modules also brought about immense benefits for the learners, who could now participate in training sessions at their convenience and according to their preferred schedules.

Third Term Learning prioritizes custom, collaborative course solutions

  • Third Term Learning has always prioritized the need to meet the diverse course needs and requirements of their client base. To do so, they require solutions that allow them to create engaging, appealing lessons for learners and integrate soft skills and technical proficiency assessments into courses.
  • They needed ways to develop custom gamified courses so users can practice their skills in real time. They also needed to create engaging, dynamic courses that would allow learners to practice their product knowledge and incorporate multiple skills into a single e-learning module.
  • Collaboration and cohesion are high on their priority list: Third Term Learning requires the ability to coordinate an interdisciplinary team using various multimedia tools to create a single course.

THE ANSWER

With Articulate 360, Third Term Learning brings their engaging courses to life

Third Term Learning offers numerous off-the-shelf courses on soft skills, safety, and information technology, among others. These broadly appealing courses come in multiple languages for Third Term’s international client base. But Third Term’s showstoppers are bespoke solutions, like their award-winning course “A Trip of Unfortunate Events,” which won the Best of DemoFest Award at the 2022 DevLearn conference.

Third Term Learning uses a multi-stage design process to create custom, engaging, and effective e-learning. Each project starts with brainstorming sessions to conceive ideas, identify needed resources, and assign an interdisciplinary team. Scripting and graphics phases follow. In stage three, the course creators construct lessons using rich multimedia, various software, and design tools.

The final step of the process leverages Articulate 360. The development team uses Storyline 360 for bespoke, LMS-friendly features like the gamified branching scenario in A Trip of Unfortunate Events Game. Methods like games allow learners to make decisions that impact outcomes throughout the module and make learning “stickier.” At the end of the development process, Third Term Learning shares the project in Review 360 to gather client feedback and improvement suggestions and tailor the final product to the client’s needs.
