What is task analysis?
Task analysis is the process of breaking a job or workflow into the steps, decisions, skills, and tools people need to complete it well. Instructional designers use it to see what performers actually do on the job before they design training.
Example: Before building warehouse onboarding, our designer listed each receiving step and noted where errors spiked so the e-learning could target those moments.
In instructional design, task analysis sits between needs analysis and clear learning objectives. It turns vague requests into concrete actions, decisions, and practices you can build into training.
Why task analysis matters
L&D content creators often face a high volume of training requests and pressure to ship fast. Task analysis protects quality under that pressure. You spend less time guessing what the job looks like and more time teaching the steps that drive real performance.
A solid task analysis also keeps stakeholders aligned. When managers, subject-matter experts, and designers agree on the steps and tough decision points, you reduce rework later. Courses stay focused on the on-the-job behavior that matters most.
How to apply task analysis
Start with the performance goal. Observe or interview top performers and map the steps, tools, inputs, and decisions. Call out where people struggle, skip steps, or need a quick reference.
Use those findings to write objectives, choose practice activities, and decide what belongs in a course versus a job aid. In Articulate 360, turn high-stakes steps into scenario practice in Storyline or modular lessons in Rise. Share drafts in Review so experts can confirm you captured the real workflow.
