What is audience analysis?
Audience analysis is the study of job and context-related details about the people who will take your training. You use that insight to design the course around their real jobs, skills, and constraints. It covers prior knowledge, roles, motivation, devices, accessibility needs, and the contexts in which people learn and apply new skills.
Example: For a retail product-knowledge course, the designer interviewed managers and shadowed shifts so scenarios matched floor work.
In e-learning and L&D work, this step sits early in instructional design. Teams often run it right after they confirm training is the right fix. Findings shape tone, examples, interactions, assessments, and delivery so that content fits the people you serve.
Why audience analysis matters
When request volume is high and timelines are tight, it’s tempting to jump straight into authoring. A focused audience analysis saves rework later. You learn what people already know, how best to communicate with them, and which barriers (tools, time, language, or access) can block performance.
That clarity helps L&D content creators protect quality under pressure. You can right-size depth and choose scenarios that fit the full group. Stakeholders share one picture of the training audience, so reviews stay on track and focus on desired outcomes rather than personal taste.
How to apply audience analysis
Start with a short set of practical questions. Who is the primary audience, and is there a secondary group? What do they already know, and what must they do on the job after the course? Does each audience have the same access to technology and information?
Note devices, support, accessibility needs, and language needs too. Talk to managers, SMEs, and a few learners, and skim job aids or performance data when you can.
Turn findings into design choices for path length, practice style, examples, and media. Build the training in Articulate 360 where the integrated AI can help you adjust tone, reading level, images, and interactions based on the audience and needs you’ve identified.
