What are learning pathways?

Learning pathways are structured sequences of courses, modules, and learning experiences designed to guide employees toward mastering a skill or achieving a goal. Also known as structured learning paths, learning pathways include content organized in a logical progression. The structure allows employees to build knowledge incrementally rather than through disconnected training courses. 

Learning and development teams use learning pathways to map out employees’ learning journeys, from foundational topics to advanced concepts, ensuring that each step builds on the last. Learning pathways provide a framework for outlining content across a curriculum, helping learners understand where they are in the training process, what comes next, and how each course relates to their professional development. 

Example: The L&D team built a robust onboarding learning pathway that included training on the company culture and policies, software onboarding, AI policies, benefits, and a 90-day performance framework. Spacing out courses helps employees work at their own pace and return to previous ones as needed.

Why are learning pathways important?

Learning pathways provide purposeful, connected learning opportunities for employees rather than isolated, disconnected training sessions. When employees train without structured learning paths, they may experience fragmented learning, take courses out of order, or miss critical concepts. 

Learning pathways help learning and development teams provide consistency and scale training programs and combat the “forgetting curve.” Every employee receives the same quality experience, so it’s easier for teams to evaluate program effectiveness, track progress, and demonstrate business impact. Learning pathways may help to improve completion rates and employee knowledge retention by reducing decision fatigue. Employees follow a path and build on what they learned in each previous course.
