What are labeled graphics?

Labeled graphics are click-and-reveal interactions that place small buttons, called markers or hotspots, over static images. Learners click or hover over the markers to reveal more information. Instructional designers use labeled graphics to help break down complex visuals into clear, digestible parts for learners.

Example: In geography class, we used labeled graphics of continents with markers over each country to help us learn the names of their capital cities.

What are the benefits of labeled graphics?

Labeled graphics are a versatile e-learning tool with clickable, visible markers to reveal definitions, explanations, or examples. Learners navigate labeled graphics in any order they choose, which encourages self-guided learning. This bite-sized, engaging process helps increase learner comprehension, reduce cognitive load, and support retention.

How to implement labeled graphics in e-learning

Instructional designers use labeled graphics to turn static images into engaging, interactive e-learning moments. Many function to break down complex visuals into focused explanations that are easier for learners to understand.

Common training uses for labeled graphics include:

  • Software onboarding to point out common interface functions.
  • Technical training to indicate different machine components
  • Process documents to explain complex workflows with maps or flowcharts

The Articulate 360 platform includes Rise 360 and Storyline 360—two course authoring tools that make it easy to create interactive e-learning content. Upload any labeled graphic block image—static or immersive—insert and label your markers over the image, add a description to each marker, and customize how they’ll be revealed to your learners.
