What is a training audience?
A training audience is a group of learners for whom learning materials and learning objectives are specifically designed to benefit. Organizations model training materials to match the unique needs, preferences, and skill levels of those in their training audience. L&D departments conduct in-depth audience analyses to uncover learner traits, demographics, experience level, and more to guide instructional design and content development.
Example: Our training audience consists largely of remote workers, which necessitates an online learning environment.
Organizations tailor training content to deliver personalized learning experiences, which result in more engaging and effective training sessions.
How do you match training programs to your target audience?
Training sessions should be relevant and applicable to each learner’s unique set of skills, preferences, needs, and goals. Align learning objectives to skill gaps uncovered by the needs analysis, and adjust content difficulty to your target audience’s skill level. Your chosen learning environment—in-person, online, or blended—should be dictated by your audience as well. Geographically dispersed teams require online e-learning, whereas local teams can take part in traditional, in-person training sessions.
It’s important to also adapt learning materials to help learners overcome any constraints or barriers. Make content accessible for all learners by following this e-learning accessibility checklist, and make learning inclusive for global audiences by localizing content.
