What is l10n?

L10n is short for localization, which is the process of adapting content so that it is accurate and relevant for a global audience. The localization process includes text translation to support multiple languages and modification of multimedia elements to resonate with a particular market or target audience. In addition to deepening understanding of the material for global learners and reducing language barriers, localization also helps organizations conform to local laws, norms, and expectations.

Example: Localization (l10n) of our content goes beyond simple translation to different languages—it accounts for different currencies, measurements, phrases, and formatting to match local expectations and norms.

The localization process helps facilitate better understanding and a sense of belonging in the target market, producing a better user experience for global customers and partners.

What are the benefits of localization?

Effective localization helps preserve key aspects of the original content in other languages, including humor, tone, and cultural references. Details like images, symbols, colors, and time, number, and date formats are all adapted to meet and respect cultural norms of each particular market. For organizations, localized e-learning content translates to an expanded market reach, increased engagement and conversions, and a competitive advantage.
