The Challenge

Mondelēz International sought a cost-effective solution for faster, high-quality localization

Growth is a core value for Mondelēz International. The organization’s initiatives foster innovation and prioritize speed and efficiency. Employee training is a key driver of this growth, and Mondalēz encourages people across teams, levels, and geographies to adapt to new challenges and lead in their field. In the age of AI, the need for up-to-date training is constant.

While Mondelēz’s training covers all business areas, its recent focus has concentrated on company-wide training. With employees around the world speaking dozens of languages, localizing training is key to making training effective, compliant, and accessible.

“We’ve translated our courses in the past, but many methods had drawbacks in time or cost,” says Liz Derr, Learning Design Lead at Mondelēz. “Outsourcing translators was costly, third-party AI translation tools involved tedious copy-paste work, and relying on internal language speakers took significant time.”

Mondelēz needed a localization solution that would address these challenges at scale and allow the team to develop the courses in-house—crucial to reduce timelines, streamline processes, and save money.

With a new company-wide training on the horizon that required translation in 32 languages, including Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Chinese, Turkish, and Polish, Derr began searching for alternative localization solutions.

The Answer

With Localization, Mondelēz International successfully rolled out a course in 32 languages for 30,000+ employees

Derr searched the E-Learning Heroes Community and discovered Articulate Localization. The product, integrated into Articulate 360, met Mondelēz’s new training needs.

“Using Articulate 360, we could build our course in-house, customize it, localize it for our global audience, and maintain ownership of it over time,” says Derr. “And with the click of a button, we could translate into all the languages we needed.”

The course, AI Essentials for Everyone, was crucial for empowering Mondelēz’s global workforce to use AI tools thoughtfully and compliantly. “We all see how AI is evolving at unprecedented speed, transforming life and work,” says Derr. “For compliance purposes and business impact, we need to make sure that everyone in the company, regardless of where in the world they work, has the same vocabulary to talk about AI, understands its risks and benefits, and uses it according to our policies.”

First, Derr used Articulate 360 to build the course in English, adding elements like interactive scenarios and videos to engage learners. She translated the course, and “in minutes, with one click, I had copies of our course in 32 languages,” she says.

Next, the team assigned internal validators for each language. “What impressed me the most about Articulate Localization was the validation process,” says Derr. “Validators could see the original and translated text in context of the course layout. That meant there was no back-and-forth to ensure correct edits were applied.”

Instead, the validators directly edited the text in context, and Derr was able to import their edits with a click. “The ability to directly edit text and import changes is what makes Articulate Localization transformative,” she says. “Our validators loved being able to make edits directly and see how they show up in the course.”

Derr also appreciated the ability to easily translate video captions with Localization, which allowed the team to release global training faster while retaining the course’s engaging elements.

Unlocking Human Potential

With Localization, Mondelēz International optimizes the learning experience for employees—regardless of the language they speak

Following the successful rollout of AI Essentials for Everyone to 30,000 Mondelēz employees, Derr is excited about the potential to use Localization for other projects. “Articulate Localization opens possibilities to offer more content more efficiently in more languages, reducing our reliance on external vendors,” she says. “Cost and time savings have been really significant with Articulate Localization compared to outsourcing.”

And if the AI Essentials course or other projects need updates in the future, Derr notes, Localization makes it easy for validators to focus solely on the updates without having to recheck the entire course. “That’s so valuable for topics like AI, which change quickly over time,” she says.

Derr feels that Localization provides key strategic advantages in scalability and consistency for training a large global workforce. Localization allows the team to optimize learning experiences for all learners, regardless of the language they speak.

“Articulate Localization is leading in this area,” says Derr. “We’re grateful for the partnership and proud to have applied it to a major project right from the start. It’s going to open a lot of possibilities for us.”

With Localization, Mondelēz International localizes courses into 32 languages for over 30,000 employees, powering a culture of continuous growth and innovation across the organization.

Cost and time savings have been really significant with Articulate Localization compared to outsourcing.
