What is active learning?
Active learning is an instructional approach that engages the learner in an interactive learning process. Contrary to passive learning, where the learner merely absorbs information, active learning involves learners directly in discussions, problem-solving exercises, scenario-based learning, interactive knowledge checks, and other engaging activities.
Example: We’re rebuilding our onboarding program to include active learning modules after surveys revealed that new reps desired more interactivity in their training.
What are the benefits of active learning?
Using active learning techniques in instructional design allows your learners to engage with the material firsthand, enhancing knowledge retention. Interactive, scenario-based exercises engage students with real-world examples, helping to draw a direct connection between training and practical application.
Active learning’s emphasis on real-time analysis improves employee decision-making and problem-solving skills, leading to greater productivity and confidence. With an active hand in their own learning, employees are more motivated to take on new challenges. Group-based active learning strategies can increase your team’s desire to collaborate.
Top active learning strategies
Effective active learning strategies aim to keep the learner engaged while reducing cognitive load—or the amount of mental effort it takes to process new information. Bite-sized microlearning modules often feature interactive drag-and-drop activities, flashcards, and click-to-reveal content to keep learners engaged.
In-person role playing and e-learning branching scenarios present the learner with choices that lead to different outcomes to enhance decision-making skills. Gamified training features leaderboards, badges, rewards, and time constraints, making the learner an active participant within a narrative or in competition with their colleagues. Finally, social and collaborative active learning strategies like live discussions, virtual message boards, and the jigsaw technique build engagement through peer interaction.
