Evolve static training to engaging, flexible learning
Two years ago, WellSpan Health recognized that its traditional training approach needed to evolve. Instructors led new hires through computer-based sessions. While this model worked, it had become outdated. Classroom training required travel, limited flexibility, and centered on passive, follow-along learning that didn’t fully engage modern learners or make the best use of their time.
The team’s first step was shifting to e-learning, driven in part by requirements tied to their electronic health record (EHR) system. This transition introduced more flexibility and revealed new opportunities. With the right foundation in place, the team realized it could improve learning engagement, efficiency, and interactivity.
WellSpan Health turned to Articulate to help them elevate their training program with more dynamic, learner-centered content.

With Articulate 360 AI, WellSpan Health has transformed its training into a flexible, role-based learning experience designed to meet its diverse workforce’s needs.
“Articulate helped us take learning to the next level,” says Matthew Seitz, Training Director.
Using Articulate, the team built structured learning pathways for nearly 300 roles across the organization, spanning clinical and non-clinical positions. Tailored, on-demand curricula are now available for two-thirds of those roles, with content aligned to each position’s responsibilities. Eighty-nine of these on-demand courses include fast-track options at the start of the curriculum, so learners can demonstrate their knowledge and test out of training they already know. Meanwhile, employees who lack experience get a general overview of their role’s responsibilities and set them up for a successful start.
Each learning experience is designed to grow with the employee. Courses start with day-one readiness foundational skills, and evolve into advanced training in the subsequent months, rounded out with ongoing reinforcement. Learners progress through focused content sections and can zero in on the areas most relevant to their role while applying what they learn in real-world settings.
The team creates interactive courses in both Rise and Storyline that simulate real work environments. Learners practice tasks in scenarios that mirror live systems following a “see it, hear it, do it” approach that improves confidence and retention. Course authors speed up development using AI, especially with features like AI-generated voiceovers and images. What once required hours of recording and editing can now be done in minutes, without sacrificing consistency, quality, or flexibility.
Beyond individual roles, WellSpan also uses Articulate 360 AI to create a more connected learning experience. Training increasingly reflects how different roles interact across the healthcare system, helping employees understand not only their responsibilities, but also how their work supports others. The result is a more collaborative, informed workforce equipped to deliver better patient outcomes.

WellSpan Health’s investment in modern learning is delivering measurable results across the organization. On average, onboarding pathways earn a 4.6 out of 5 effectiveness rating, reflecting a strong learner experience that is both relevant and impactful for new hires.
Efficiency gains have been equally significant. Fast-track options have reduced training time significantly, but even courses without fast track options have saved significant hours. An Ambulatory Clinical Staff curriculum, for example, went from a 12-hour in-person class to 4 hours of on-demand training—before the fast-track option was even developed. Today, fewer than 20% of courses are still delivered in person.
Fast-track assessments have further amplified those gains. “The fast track training we’ve created with Articulate 360 lets us redirect hours and resources directly into patient care and procedures,” says Seitz. “It enables our staff to spend their time where it’s most valuable.”
To date, 71% of users who attempt a fast track option are able to begin role documentation immediately, freeing them to focus on patient care right away. In one month alone, 166 staff members passed fast-track assessments. Launching fast track options has translated into an estimated $2.7 million in salary hours redirected from classroom training to direct patient care. Combined with savings from the broader on-demand curriculum, total funds redirected to direct patient impact reached approximately $4.3 million since July 2023.
Learners appreciate the flexibility, too. One user noted, “I liked having a virtual on-demand class of just myself so I could receive more tailored information and guidance. This allowed me to go back through lessons and practice at my own pace.”
AI-powered tools have also dramatically accelerated content development. “I used to have to lock myself in a soundproof closet to record voiceovers,” says Marti Farrell, Training Manager. “Editing took hours. With Articulate’s AI voices, it takes minutes—and I can alter a small section if needed without having to re-record everything.” Farrell says the new workflow dramatically shifted her production time from 35 minutes per minute of audio to 3 minutes—more than 90% faster.
These improvements go beyond time savings. By ensuring employees know how to use critical systems and processes effectively, WellSpan has strengthened the accuracy and consistency of documentation within the medical chart. Proper training helps clinicians capture the right information at the right time, improving care coordination, supporting compliance, and creating a more complete patient record.
