Running a global shipping operation means training can never stop. Hapag-Lloyd founded its training academy to meet that demand—building capability across functions and regions without sacrificing quality or speed.

As the company’s internal center for capability development, the Hapag-Lloyd Academy translates the demands of a global shipping operation into training that reaches employees across all functions and regions. Daniel Jebakumar sits at the helm of content development at the company. His training program covers everything from pre-boarding and onboarding programs to functional skill-building, behavioral leadership development, cybersecurity awareness, and compliance training. In many cases, training requires multiple layers and modalities, with instructor-led sessions supported by pre-reads and supplemental materials. 

Delivering that breadth of training at speed, in a business where conditions shift quickly and timelines are short, demands tools that can keep up. The Academy needed a solution that could match that pace—one that would let Jebakumar’s team develop and deliver without sacrificing quality.

When a Dutch law mandated an awareness training on criminal activity targeting staff and crew, Jebakumar’s team had two weeks to deliver critical training on this real operational risk to the 300-vessel fleet. Working with Storyline’s triggers, layers, and animation capabilities, the team built a “do it and learn” branching-scenario training where employees work through realistic situations and experience the consequences of their choices. “With triggers and layers—with that combination, with a little animation—the training came out really well,” says Jebakumar, noting that the initiative exceeded expectations.

AI in Articulate has since become central to how the team works. Jebakumar uses it to accelerate instructional design, sharpen copy, and reduce the overhead of content iteration at every stage of development. Localization has become equally critical—a necessity for an organization with mandatory legal training requirements across multiple language markets.
