Storyline 3: How to Use Course Completion Triggers from Storyline 360

Article Last Updated

Storyline 3 doesn’t have course completion triggers, but Storyline 360 does. And as of March 6, 2018, Storyline 3 users can open Storyline 360 project files that have course completion triggers, and those triggers will work as expected. Install the latest Storyline 3 update to use Storyline 360 completion triggers.

You can’t edit completion triggers or create new ones in Storyline 3, but you can track learners' progress using existing completion triggers in a project that was created with Storyline 360. Just choose the completion trigger tracking option when you publish for LMS. See the following questions and answers for details.

What are course completion triggers?

Course completion triggers let you control precisely when a course is marked complete. Use them to send a status update to your LMS when learners perform a specific action or reach a certain point on the timeline.

Here’s an example of a trigger that sends a positive status to the LMS when the learner clicks a button. The trigger will send either Completed or Passed, depending on the reporting status you select when you publish the course.

Why is the status grayed-out?

And here’s an example of a trigger that sends a negative status to the LMS when the learner responds to an interaction incorrectly. The trigger will send either Incomplete or Failed, depending on the reporting status you select when you publish the course.

Why is the status grayed-out?

How do I track a course using completion triggers?

When you publish for LMS, click the Tracking property, then select the option to Track using complete course trigger as shown below. (If there aren’t any completion triggers in your course, you won’t see the option to track via completion triggers.)

Can I have more than one completion trigger in the same course?

Yes. A Storyline course can have multiple completion triggers.

For example, let’s say you have a branching scenario where learners must make a series of decisions. You might have a trigger at the end of each incorrect path that sends a failed status to the LMS and another trigger at the end of the correct path that sends a passed status.

If your LMS accepts more than one status update per course, each completion trigger that the learner encounters will update the LMS with the learner’s latest status.

However, if your LMS only allows one status update per course, the first completion trigger that the learner encounters will be recorded in your LMS, and the other completion triggers will be ignored.

Ask your LMS administrator for help if you aren’t sure how many status updates your LMS allows for each course.

If I use completion triggers to track a course, can I also track a quiz score?

No. A Storyline course can be tracked by only one of these three options:

  • The number of slides viewed
  • A quiz result
  • Completion triggers

Select your tracking option when you publish.
