When publishing Articulate Storyline content for LMS, you'll have options to include output for HTML5 and the Articulate Mobile Player app for iPad (in addition to the default Flash content). The version that users see when they launch the course and how it interacts with the LMS depends on three criteria:

  • The browser or device they're using to view the content
  • The output options you selected when you published (HTML5, Articulate Mobile Player)
  • The LMS specification that you selected when you published (SCORM, AICC, Tin Can API)
Flash

If users are viewing content in a browser that supports Flash, they'll see the Flash version of your content.

Flash content will be tracked and reported in your LMS. If you published for SCORM or AICC, users will be able to switch between the Flash version of your content and the HTML5 version—if you included it—without losing their progress or results in the LMS. If you published for Tin Can API, users will be able to switch between all output formats (Flash, HTML5, and Articulate Mobile Player) without losing their progress or results.

HTML5

If users are viewing content in a browser that does not support Flash and if you included HTML5 output, they'll see the HTML5 version of your course instead. (If they're viewing on an iPad, see the next section.)

HTML5 content will be tracked and reported in your LMS. If you published for SCORM or AICC, users will be able to switch between the Flash version of your content and the HTML5 version without losing their progress or results in the LMS. If you published for Tin Can API, users will be able to switch between all output formats (Flash, HTML5, and Articulate Mobile Player) without losing their progress or results.

Articulate Mobile Player app for iPad

If users are viewing content on an iPad and if you included output for the Articulate Mobile Player, the course will launch in the Articulate Mobile Player app. If they don't already have the app installed, they'll be prompted to install it.

However, if you did not include output for the Articulate Mobile Player but you did include HTML5 output, the course will launch in mobile Safari instead. (See the HTML5 section above.)

Articulate Mobile Player content will be tracked and reported in your LMS if you published for Tin Can API and your LMS provider has implemented Tin Can API support. In fact, if you published for Tin Can API, users will be able to switch between all output formats (Flash, HTML5, and Articulate Mobile Player) without losing their progress or results.

Note: Support for tracking Articulate Mobile Player content in an LMS via Tin Can API was added in Update 1 for Storyline. To take advantage of the new features and fixes, download and install the latest version of Storyline from the link in your product confirmation email, or get it here. Then republish your Storyline project for Tin Can API.

If you published for SCORM or AICC, your LMS will not be able to track or report Articulate Mobile Player content. If you need to track the results of your LMS courses, it's recommended that you do not include the Articulate Mobile Player option when publishing. Or, encourage your LMS provider to support Tin Can API. (Our white paper on Tin Can API implementation provides helpful information for your LMS provider.)

If you publish for SCORM or AICC and you don't need to track users' progress or results, you may still be able to view content in the Articulate Mobile Player. Some learning management systems will allow it, while others will not. You'll need to test your content in your LMS environment to determine if your LMS will allow viewing SCORM or AICC content in the iPad app.
