We are trying to use Captivate Files (Captivate 3.0) in conjunction with Articulate. We are running into some problems.
When I playback the Articulate presentation, we don't see the Captivate file, although based on the lengths of the slide, it is there. If I move the playback indicator towards the middle, we see the file. It is as if the file was preloading for a long time. So, I tried increasing the preload time in Captivate as well as in Articulate, played with FPS (although I know it’s supposed to be 30FPS in Articulate). I would really appreciate your feedback. |

Here's an article I saw a while ago that might help.

I would check that your framerate (fps) in your Captivate movie is indeed 30 fps. Otherwise, you are likely to get errors.

If you're inserting as a single SWF ...
Keep in mind the filesize of your inserted Captivate SWFs ... if they're large (750kb+) then it's simply taking a while for it to load (I believe it needs to load the entire file if inserted as a single SWF). We noticed this sets the player to "pause" while it's loading, which makes it look like it's not working, but eventually it starts playing. Alternatively, you can also insert it with the Captivate player files (as per the link above), but then of course you have two conflicting sets of user controls - which is not good in a usability context. We opted for the single-swf option, but included a "Please wait while this slide loads" message (in the preceding PPT slide, and underneath the inserted SWF). That improved the usability and let users know their presentation wasn't frozen. Cheers, Shane. |

Also keep in mind that Articulate does not preload inserted SWFs ahead of time. As Shane mentioned--depending on SWF size, connection speed, and other factors--it can take a while to load.
If you have a number of large SWFs, you might check out this blog article that shows you how to create a custom preloader if you have the Flash application handy. It's extra work, but for many, it can greatly reduce wait times. HTH, Phil |
