Hi folks,
It worked! Following Dmouzealous suggestion of turning off "Prompt to resume on presentation restart" the bookmarking problem was solved! Thanks a lot for you support! |

I saw the answer downstream of this post, but wonder in the meantime if that solution [turning off the default Articulate method of placing a cookie on the PC] will also work in the case of a PC or network crash? We opted for a different authoring system for a major set of courses just to overcome this issue, although we use Articulate for lots of other courses. We had a few cases of users's systems crashing mid-way in a long course and they had to start over.

This thread was related to Articulate 5. Is that what you are working with? Presenter '09 has different resume options so the issue you are experiencing may be different. Are you viewing the content in an LMS? If so, what is the standard? SCORM 1.2, 2004 or AICC? If you are not and you are using the resume feature on a really long course then that may eventually break if you don't change your local flash storage from the default of 100 kb to something much larger (I usually set my Flash storage to unlimited). That would typically resolve any issues due to the Flash cookie being used to resume a course. However, if you don't want someone to have to do that then the solution would likely be to keep your presentations smaller.
Also, Engage and Quizmaker '09 both have resume functionality so if you are experiencing an issue with resuming courses it might be related to inserted content and not Presenter's resume functionality. It would be hard to say what, if any, issues you are experiencing are related to resume without knowing more about the environment the content is in and actually viewing the content and reproducing the behavior.

Justin,
We are working with Articulate '09 in the SumTotal LMS (Results on Demand). I think I understand the normal resume function, that is, how to set the options and the fact it works if you exit by choice. What we're trying to ensure is that if a person's PC or network connection goes down, their place will also be bookmarked correctly. This happens to us once in awhile and we hope to save the learner from having to start over on courses with forced navigation. In another more customizable authoring tool we 'push' a bookmark to the LMS every few screens. Is there a way to do that in Articulate, or does it only mark one's spot when they click Exit? Thanks! |

We do send suspend_data every time you advance to the next slide. I'm not sure how losing your internet connection would effect where you have to start over from. I'm assuming it would be the last time Presenter sent the suspend_data to the LMS. That's something you should be able to test pretty easily with your LMS. View some content. Disconnect from the internet. See where you start over.

Thanks Justin! Good to know. I'll test it with our LMS soon.

Hey, Justin! That's not what we see. We see it at course launch, and then every 10 minutes and then again at course exit.

Hey Gerry,
I think that is likely because you are using AICC. Because of the problems that we were seeing with AICC LMS's getting overloaded with data we sent updates less frequently. If you are using a SCORM based LMS you should see updates to the suspend_data after every slide. As a note though on the SCORM side, although we update the suspend_data every slide we don't send an LMSCommit every slide (which is what tells the LMS to save the data). So if your browser crashed or you lost internet connection and didn't regain it, the data *might* not be saved by the LMS, meaning the supsend_data would be lost. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the heads-up and correction, Dave.
Much appreciated. Maybe someday we'll move to SCORM and I can be further confused. Best!
