There’s been a lot of buzz in recent months about the desire to see more Engage ’09 Community Interactions.
These 3 Community Interactions are already available via our website:
- Flashcards (pre-installed with Engage ’09; download again)
- Flipbook (download this interaction)
- Stairstep (download this interaction)
A handful of Articulate staff and customers have heard the demand for more interaction types and responded with Community Interactions of their own, including these 3 new interactions:
Carousel Community Interaction
Articulate Customer Support Engineer Dave Burton created the Carousel Community Interaction. You can download this interaction here (or as a zip file here. Dave also recently wrote an in-depth guide about the Engage ’09 SDK and how to get started developing your own Community Interactions.
Bar Chart Community Interaction
Articulate MVP James Kingsley has created a Bar Chart Community Interaction that’s available for download here. And you can download the source .INTR file for the above demo, too.
I asked James why he decided to create a Community Interaction:
“I wanted to create an Engage Interaction to help spark more innovation in the community. There are so many possibilities for Engage interactions that it is hard to decide where to begin. I thought if I got one out there, the community might think ‘Good start… but what if it…???’
“I built a bar chart interaction because we often have figures we need present like ’80% of accidents occur in the home’ or ‘Sales totals by district.’”
James will be presenting a topic on the Engage SDK at eLearning DevCon.
Tic-Tac-Toe Community Interaction
David “Mac” McClelland, eLearning Designer Developer with Novatek Communications, Inc. has created this Tic-Tac-Toe Community Interaction. You can see a demo and register for a free download on the company’s site.
Mac had this to say about his experience creating the interaction:
“I started working on the game as a way to see what I could do with the Engage SDK. For the effort, I thought it should be something more than an alternative Process Engage Interaction. I think learners respond to simple games with gratitude — like sprinkle of salt, it shows we care about their experience.
“I prefer working on projects where I can create and mesh the graphics, animations, sounds, design and code. This was a perfect sized project to be able to do that. Developing the game was a learning experience: I followed the Stairstep tutorial first, which exposed the SDK and connections to the Flash content. Still, that is no substitute for creating something new. Coding in ActionScript 2 again after over a year in 3 was an adjustment.”
Installing Community Interactions
To install any of the above Community Interactions, do the following:
- Ensure that you have Engage ’09 Update 3 or later installed (as of this writing, Update 5 is the latest release).
- Download the desired .artpkg file via the corresponding link above (unzip, if necessary).
- Double-click the .artpkg file.
- Click “Yes” when prompted to install the interaction.
- Open Engage ’09 and create a new Community Interaction.
Create & Share Your Own
If you’re interested in creating your own Community Interaction template, Dave Burton’s blog entry on the Engage SDK is a great place to start learning more. Of course, you’ll also want to download the free Engage SDK via the link at the bottom of this page.
Want to share your interaction with us? Great! Just use this upload form.
There’s even a dedicated Engage SDK Forum where you can discuss ideas and the more technical stuff with other Flash developers. (Request access from our support team.)
Thank you to everyone who’s created new Community Interactions, and we look forward to seeing even more!

Where are the instructions on how to set the true/false values for the Tic Tac Toe?
