5 Cool Engage Tips

The extensibility of Articulate products blows me away. They’re pretty darn powerful right out of the box for building compelling e-learning content.

Looking to push the limits? Combine Engage with Presenter, or look under the hood at the XML foundation of our products, and the sky’s suddenly the limit to what you can do.

And our forums are a great place to start cultivating ideas. Here I’ve put together links to some of the more useful Engage tips from our forums, along with a couple other cool tips from this blog and Dave’s:

  1. Add Engage tabs or slides within Presenter.

  2. Create a custom Engage color scheme.
  3. Embed an Engage interaction within another one.
  4. Add a new color to your color picker.
  5. Create an index page with links that go directly to a particular word in a glossary (download example).

Have another cool Engage tip you’d like to share? Leave a comment here or post it in the Engage Forum.

You can pull a swf (with the animation and audio) from a presenter module. Thus you can use Presenter to create some custom swf files for Engage.

I posted an example in the forum:

Nice tip, doofdaddy!

And here’s another one I posted in the forums this morning about resizing your published interaction by editing engage.html.

Can we change Engage interaction ‘media borders’ from rounded to square/90degress to match Presenter and Quizmaker?

Thanks for the suggestion, Nathalie. This is not currently possible, but I’d encourage you to submit a feature request.

First let me say that this is a very nice product (AE). I was looking for some guidance on removing the default black title bar, can this be removed ? I have reviewed the articles on custom color schemes, big help on matching client branding.

If there’s a work around or suggestion please let me know as I find that I learn something new weekly about AE.

Best Regards,

Tony

Hi Tony- Glad to hear you like Engage. Although it’s currently not possible to remove the black title bar, I’d encourage you to submit a feature request for us to consider in a future release.

I just got engage and it is great. I do not know when the next version is going to be available but I think it would be great to have aflowchart or org chart option. Also it was mentioned that you are coming out with a new version of quizmaker. Can you advise when you anticpate new versions of teh different software programs.

Hi Steve- Glad to hear you’re enjoying Engage so far! Please feel free to share all feedback via our feature request form.

As for future versions, we don’t announce future release dates, but you can learn more about the upcoming Vista-compatible betas for Presenter, Quizmaker, and Engage right here.

I’m having some trouble getting Engage interactions to run in Presenter. When I publish to my desktop, they run OK, but when I try to publish the presenter to the web, they don’t run, the presenter slide is blank and it hangs up. I’ve tried publishing the Engage content to the same site, but that didn’t work either. Anyone know a workaround for this?

Hi Lisa-

We do see this from time to time, and here’s the solution that should address this issue for you:

If you have created a presentation that contains a Quizmaker quiz or an Engage interaction and the quiz or interaction does not display in the published presentation, it is likely an issue with the directory structure of your presentation.

This issue is usually caused by renaming your PowerPoint file. To correct this issue, please do the following:

Delete the slide that contains the placeholder for your quiz or interaction.
Republish your quiz or interaction in Quizmaker or Engage.
Insert the quiz or interaction into your presentation.
Save the PowerPoint file. Do not rename the file or save to a different location.
Republish.

Thanks Gabe! We have changed the name of the powerpoint. I’m glad it appears to be an easy fix! I’ll try what you’ve recommended and see if it works.

Hi Gabe,
I am creating a new color scheme for engage that our dept is going to use. Dave Mozaleaous’s presentation on creating custom color schemes is great info but it didn’t give the details on items #8 through #20 in xml files. (for example what happens when I change the hex value for listselect and listhover?)
My problem is I am trying to change the color in the interaction tab- when you you click on the tab is that activenavbutton or listselect?
I tried changing list select it didn’t seem to make a difference.. Thanks Ipek

I added flash video an Engage interaction and the video does not fill the container. There are black areas at the top and bottom of the video. Is there a way to make the video fill the entire container?

Thanks..Mike

The thing that I really like about the FAQ Engage model is being able to SEARCH items. Is that an option or current feature in Glossary interactions!? Any plans to include it!? Seems like a simple transfer of code from the FAQ app! ;-)
