3 Easy Steps to Customizing Review Feedback in Articulate Storyline

If you’ve built quizzes in Storyline, you might know of a handy little gem called the Review Quiz button. It’s a feature you can include on your results slides so learners can go back through their quiz questions and review which ones they got right or wrong.

But what if you want to do more than just show a “correct” or “incorrect” banner on certain questions? Often, learners want to make sense of why an answer was right or wrong. Why not tap into that teachable moment by providing some additional helpful content during the quiz review?

Storyline makes that super easy. You can enhance your quiz review with any question-specific content you like—remedial help, supplemental tips or links, movies, text, images, audio—the sky’s the limit!

Check out the three easy steps below to customize your quiz review for any slide:

1. Open the question editor

Go to any question slide and click the Edit button above the trigger panel. This opens the question editor.

2. Enter some text in the Post-Quiz Review field

At the bottom of the question editor, you’ll see a field called Post-Quiz Review. Enter some text there, and Storyline will use it to create a new layer on your question slide called Review. This slide layer is what learners see if they choose to review their quiz.

3. Return to Normal View & customize your new Review layer

Click Save & Close to close the question editor and go back to Normal View. Then select the Review layer that Storyline created, and customize it with whatever content you want learners to see during the quiz review.

That’s all there is to it. You can use these steps to customize the Review layer for any question in your quiz. Be sure to check out the screencast above if you need a visual walk-through of the steps. It only takes a few minutes to transform a standard quiz review into a content-rich experience that’ll help your users extend their learning!

Thanks for this wonderful screenr and instructions! After the student has taken the quiz, and then reviewed, is it possible to allow them to retake the quiz?

I was disappointed to learn that the “normal” quiz feedback only allows one “wrong feedback” instead of customized feedback for each wrong answer. This “review” solution allows for better feedback, but then I’d like the student to be able to retake the whole thing, either a specified number of attempts, or an infinite number of times. Can you help with that?

Hi there Luke. This tutorial should get you pointed in the right direction with regard to allowing multiple attempts on a Storyline quiz. Also, regarding feedback on incorrect answers, for several question types Storyline does allow you to set up answer-specific feedback. In the question editor you’ll see a dropdown called Feedback, and if answer-specific feedback is available, you’ll see a choice in that dropdown called “By Answer.” This allows you to enter different feedback for each answer choice. For more info, check out this tutorial and scroll to the part that says ‘Step 4: Choose Your Options For Feedback and Branching.’ If have trouble or need a little more guidance, feel free to post in the Storyline forum and we can help out.
